Ina May Gaskin, MA, CPM, PhD (Hon.), is the founder and director of the Farm Midwifery Center, established in 1971 near Summertown, Tennessee. By 2011, the centre had supported approximately 3,000 births, and Ina May herself has attended more than 1,200 births throughout her career.

She has lectured internationally at midwifery conferences and medical schools, speaking to both students and faculty. From 1996 to 2002, she served as President of the Midwives’ Alliance of North America.

Her contributions to midwifery have been recognised with several honours, including the ASPO/Lamaze Irwin Chabon Award (1997), the Tennessee Perinatal Association Recognition Award (1997), and selection as a Visiting Fellow of Morse College at Yale University (2003). In 2011, she was named a recipient of the Right Livelihood Award, presented at a ceremony before the Swedish Parliament in Stockholm.
